Sushi Exploration: Part 1

Anyone who knows me, knows that I love food. I love to explore different restaurants, try different foods and just generally enjoy the good feelings that food and friends bring me. Sushi is one of my favorites and I could eat it almost all the time. To me, sushi is like edible art. I love that it’s fresh, healthy and most of all the fantastic designs and presentations that come along with it.

My friend and I have taken it upon ourselves to have regular sushi outings and explore all the local sushi bars. Because I love seeing how each place presents their sushi, I figured why not document?

Today’s post is featuring Sushi King which is a chain in Albuquerque. Now I’m generally not an anti-chain person, but I do like to avoid them when it comes to certain foods. Sushi is one of them and I feel in my personal experience that because sushi is an art and because it seems to take more care to make, that smaller more local restaurants often make it better. They seem more appreciative of the business they are getting and they really take the time and care to make it. Encountering sushi that doesn’t taste fresh can turn a person off the stuff forever and then people miss out on such a delicious, wonderful food.

People have a misconception about what sushi is and what it tastes like, they don’t like the taste of cooked fish and they think that raw fish will have a “fishy” taste. Personally, I don’t think that raw fish tastes “fishy” the way that cooked fish does, but that’s not say that other people don’t taste it. Many people who don’t like fish hear the word sushi, think raw fish and then shut their mind down. Sushi is actually about the rice, it’s a cooked vinegar rice combined with other ingredients, not necessarily fish. So you can have a veggie roll with no fish what-so-ever and that will still be considered sushi.

I like to compare sushi to wine. It’s an acquired taste and as you begin eating sushi or drinking wine, you start with very simple, easy flavors and as your palate begins to mature you graduate to more complex flavors. Sushi is also about texture and so you may just not be able to get past certain flavors and textures but don’t let a certain texture turn you off from sushi all together. Personally, I can’t eat Boston Rolls or Philadelphia rolls which usually comes filled with cream cheese. To me, cream cheese is reserved for bagels and cheesecake. I can’t get past the consistency or taste of cream cheese in a roll but many people love the cream cheese in their rolls.

We started off with Edamame which is just steamed soy beans that are salted. It’s super delicious and very healthy. Our first set of rolls were White Fish Roll (left) and a Spider roll (right). The White Fish Roll consists of white fish, rice and veggies and the Spider Roll is avocado, soft shell crab, gobo and smelt eggs. The White Fish Roll was fresh and made really well, but it can sometimes taste a bit a bland so I like to mix some wasabi and soy sauce to dip the roll in. It just helps to give it a bit of bite and extra flavor.

I thought the Spider Roll was delicious. You could probably put avocado on anything and I’d be happy to eat it. Again, sushi is a lot about texture. Many people don’t like the feeling of the eggs on the tongue as they tend to pop and feel a bit gritty. It’s easy to scrape off if you can’t deal with the texture, but I love it.

Our next round of rolls is a simple Spicy Tuna (right). It consists of tuna, tobikko (the little orange balls on top), some veggies and a spicy sauce. It’s a basic roll but so delicious. On the left is a California Roll which is very basic and one of the most common rolls one will see when having sushi. It’s just a mix of crab and veggies. If you’re new to sushi, a California Roll is an excellent starting point to get your feet wet.

This is the roll I was most excited to write about. First of all, it’s called a Slytherin Roll and anything that makes a reference to Harry Potter is absolutely fantastic! This roll consists of spicy salmon, cucumber and avocado on the inside and topped with unagi (freshwater eel), avocado and flying fish eggs. The small red spot is actually Sriracha sauce. The Sriracha made the roll a touch spicy so I ended up wiping it off. But overall this particular roll was so delicious and was my favorite of the evening.

Overall, Sushi King is a good place to eat. The place is clean and the service is quick and friendly. The food is definitely fresh and it comes out so fast and prepared in such a beautiful fashion.

New Year’s Resolutions

A major part of doing a blog is taking the responsibility to keep up with it. In fact, it’s essential if you’re looking to have a successful blog. Clearly I have failed miserably if you consider the last month but you should try and try again. And so moving forward I’m going to do my best to be more responsible and update regularly.

At the moment I have been dealing with this:

Not the Cone of Shame!

My poor little dude had to have surgery for his prolapsed third eyelid.  Each day is a bit better for him although everyone in the house has come to hate the cone. It’s loud, sharp and a general nuisance for us all. But he goes back on the 30th to hopefully, get a clean bill of health and get that torture device removed.

I wanted to do a post about New Year’s Resolutions because it’s something that we deal with every year and almost continuously on a day to day basis through the month of January. I was prepared to make a post on January 1st about what my resolution for 2012 was going to be. Amid watching my Facebook feed fill up with what everyone else had resolved to do, I realize that I wasn’t entirely sure what I was going to resolve to do.

Every year since I was a teenager I remember discussing with people what my resolution was going to be. When I was 14, my resolution was to meet the Backstreet Boys. When I was 17 it was to do better in high school so I could get into a good college. 21-25 was to get fit and drop my jiggle so I could look like Heidi Klum. Now these aren’t entirely unrealistic resolutions but I did fail at all of them.

It’s not uncommon for people to give up on their resolutions after a month or so. Research shows that about 92% of Americans fail to keep their resolution and 80% of those people give up by then of January. Sure, there are a lot reasons for why people fail so often and many so shortly after making the resolution. People become overwhelmed, dispirited, begin to only think of negatives, lack of support, etc.

But I also think there is a lot of pressure when December 31st rolls around to have SOME type of resolution. It’s almost so cliched now that we make it more out of habit and less out of a serious desire to work for a self-change. I certainly have made what I thought were realistic resolutions to change and then barely made it a week. What’s worse was I didn’t feel any sense of responsibility to maintain my resolution or any guilt until the following New Year’s came by to let me know I failed.

So this year I didn’t make a resolution right away. I didn’t want to feel pressured to pick something to change about myself and I didn’t want to just pick something out of habit of having a New Year’s Resolution. Since January is almost gone, I have felt some anxiety over getting a resolution decided on but as I continue to think about what I will choose I’ve been giving deep thought to how realistic and how manageable it will be. While this isn’t anything new, I’ve discovered that making a resolution for the entire year is a HUGE undertaking and it doesn’t feel very realistic to me.

Saying “I’m going to lose weight this year” doesn’t really provide me with anything quantitative to work with and it gives me an easy way out. If I lose a single pound that technically fulfills my resolution and VIOLA! I’m off the hook because I did it. But 10 months later I don’t feel any happier.

Committing to be nicer to myself is a great resolution but again I feel that it’s broad so I can easily make excuses for when I’m not nice to myself. When I’m depressed and totally wallowing in self-pity, I’ll blow the whole resolution and end up in the same position as I am now.

So a New Year’s resolution seems good in theory and easy to start but difficult to execute and maintain. Why not make a resolution to keep your resolution? Again, great idea but difficult to maintain. So after thinking and thinking on this I’ve decided I won’t be making a resolution for the whole year. I can barely make plans for a week and keep them so the idea of making a commitment for 365 days makes my head spin.

No, instead this year I’m going to try to set up mini resolutions for myself. A resolution for a week or even a whole month is much easier for someone like me to manage. And I feel having multiple small resolutions will sustain my happiness instead of waiting till the end of the year to look back and measure my success and happiness in one definitive evening before needing to start all over again.

For those of you who made New Year’s Resolutions, I wish you the best of luck and I hope that you succeed. But for those of you who make them but find you don’t succeed as often as you like, I recommend trying to break it down into a series of small resolutions. Since this is the first time I’m attempting this, I’ll do my best to keep up to date posts on how the Mini-Resolution is going.

My resolution for this week is to not drink or eat anything with a lot of sugar. So no sodas and no candy bars. Hopefully I’ll make it!

I WANT ONE SO BAD!!!

WTF? Friday

Hello Minties! I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful Holiday and got everything they wanted! For me, this was my first Christmas in Albuquerque and away from my family. It was really difficult but I have to give props to the Boy Toy for trying his hardest to make it good. And my wonderful friends for taking the time to send me such wonderful gifts!

But moving on…I want to introduce everyone to a new segment called WTF? Friday! where I will be featuring things that just make you say WTF?

For this freshman post I think I found a real gem. Now I’m certainly all about creative expression and what not. I think Etsy is a great place for those with artistic vision and talent to post their goods and spread the love. On the other hand, there are quite a few people who have hobbies that are just plain creepy.

For Example:

Goat-i-corn?

Seriously? I had to double take when I first saw this particular delight. Now the dreams of every little girl can come true! A spray painted baby goat with a horn drilled to its head! YAY!

Prefer the classic white unicorn? No worries! This Etsy seller has you covered! How about a dead rodent sleeping peacefully? Got that too!

He's so peaceful! Like an angel...

Now you can make Grandma happy by giving her her very own “No Muss No Fuss” pet to keep her company. It will curl up sweetly in her lap while she watches television and rest peacefully on her pillow during bedtime.

I don’t claim to understand taxidermy as a hobby. Personally I find it pretty disturbing, the need to take dead things, stuff them with saw dust and used masturbation tissues and display them proudly as lamps or end tables. What’s more disturbing is that these things actually sold…I can’t really picture anyone sitting around thinking they need a wonderful piece of artwork for their home. Then they stumble across this shop and say “Wow! A dead chicken to hang on my wall is just what I need to give my home that Country Cottage feel I’ve always wanted!”

This brings another question to mind…how did this shop owner get a hold of these animals in such a pristine condition?

Have something to contribute to WTF? Friday? Contact me and I’ll be happy to review it. If it’s good, I’ll feature it with full credit to you!

Must Know Music Monday

Hey Minties! Happy Monday to you, if Mondays can be happy. It’s less than a week till Christmas and 3 days until the Winter Solstice. I still have so much preparation to do. December just whipped by me like an owl on speed!

Since Music and Monday both start with M, I’m bringing you a Must Know Music Monday. This Monday is all about my buddy Spruke! He’s a banging musician with such a wide range of musical talent that you are guaranteed to find at least one song you love. Industrial, Techno, Electropop, pick your poison and he’ll be sure to provide. His first album “Let’s Throw A Party” is a collection of awesome collaborations with some very talented artists.

Now he’s hard at work on his next project, Laura By Spruke with the wonderfully artistic Laura Diemer. The album “Katana & Tonic” will be dropping January 5th and if you refuse to check it out then you’re clearly hate puppies and hedgehogs.

Here is the official music video for their first single off the album Katana & Tonic.

If you want to delve deeper into Spruke Recordings you can check out his website here. Listen to past recordings, download music, watch videos and all that other delicious stuff.

Break from the Ordinary [Holiday Gifts]

I absolutely love giving gifts. I get a thrill out of finding a completely original gift for people and seeing their excitement when they open it and are utterly and completely surprised. Every year I scour the stores and the internet to try to find gifts that are original and true to the personality of the receiver or at the very least something they would never expect to be getting.

But many people probably don’t have the time or the patience to sit and try to find a gift that really stands out for everyone on their list. So they end up buying the standard Bath & Works set or a gift card to whatever store. Those gifts make nice stocking stuffers for the holidays but I know for myself personally, I have an overabundance of smelly soaps and lotions under my sink from at least 2008. And the times where I’ve had to go that route, I always feel very guilty, almost like it’s a cop-out.

I understand that there are some people who either don’t feel creative enough, don’t have the time or just don’t want to risk disappointment by getting someone something they didn’t ask for.  My stepfather and stepsister are two such people. They need to be told what they should buy and that’s it. They are satisfied with knowing they are getting exactly what they want. It absolutely drives me crazy! Presents are meant to surprise and delight the receiver! Why bother wrapping it in such pretty paper if the thrill of the surprise is gone?

For those of you who want to try to break out of the ordinary with your gifts I’ve put together some ideas and websites for you to look at. At the very least it may help you get some good ideas on what to get your friends or family, or just be a really thing for you to buy for yourself.

Creature Cups

I really like these Creature Cups. You can be drinking your coffee in the morning and then BAM you have a cute surprise at the bottom of your cup. For those who might feel this is a tad creepy, think about how much fun you’ll have scaring other people.

The Creature Cups are made by hand by the creator and artist Yumi. They run about $15.00 for either the Octopus or the Otter. It’s an affordable and fun gift.

Poster Text

For anyone who is an avid book lover, Postertext.com is an awesome website with awesome concepts. The entire book is printed on a poster with an image of of something from the book cut out. The example above is from The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. They have some very cool classics on their site already such as Grimm’s Fairy Tales, Alice in Wonderland, The Great Gatsby and Jane Eyre among many others. Don’t see a book you love? You can email them and they will let you know when that poster is made.

They run between $24.00 and $35.00. I got the Dracula one for my friend’s birthday and she loved it!

Simply FidoThis is more for the pet lovers, or people who just like to chew on rope toys. Simply Fido is a site with not only unique and whimsical toys and comfortable beds for your pet, they are also organic and eco-friendly. Each item is made from natural cotton and certified as non-toxic. The colors are made from natural plants and minerals which makes each item have its own color variation, creating and even more unique gift for your best friend.

KidRobot

I discovered KidRobot at Comic Con quite a few years ago. It was still a young company but I fell in love with the super adorable and unique selection of toys they offered. Over the years the company has grown and added even cooler items. They have a wide selection of awesome toys including DIY toys, plushies and apparel. Each item is artist created and you can even browse by artist on the website if you find yourself particularly into a certain artist.

Again these are just some sites to help those who might need a little help finding a special gift for the special people in their lives. I’m a definite advocate of creating something special with your own hands and hard work but not all of us are blessed with the extra time or ability. Hopefully these sites will help get those creative holiday juices flowing and help you find a unique gift that they will love.

OMG! I must be insane…

Well here it is! Peppermint Seas is actually up and functioning. I can’t believe it. I have to say that it’s been kind of prepped and waiting for a couple weeks now but all it needed was for me to start with my first post. But I really didn’t know what I was going to say.

What could I possibly have to say that’s interesting? What would make you want to check out what I’m doing?

The answer?

I am fucking AWESOME!

In all seriousness, I’m pretty nerdy, charmingly hilarious and a touch crazy. I think I have something that I can share with everyone. I enjoy sharing my stories and I would love to hear your stories.

I have a lot of things to say and I love to talk. I wanted to start a blog because I look at things in my day to day life and I think “This is something I should share. It would make a good blog post” and then I write the whole thing out in my head. But by the next morning I would forget my fantastic thoughts.

Blogging is a huge undertaking but I think I’m ready. I want to share my strange and sometimes inappropriate sense of humor with the world.

Peppermint Seas will be a place of magic and laughter. And you always have a home here.

Oh! Here’s a picture of a cat.
